I was thinking to myself that vegans are really obscure creatures, we are so far removed from what is deemed normal that we have our very own society. We know each other without a word spoken!!!
Here is a list of 10 ways to know if you are a vegan..
1. You go into a health food store and random people follow you asking if you know how to make seitan.
2. You make your own seitan
3. You follow a complete stranger through Wal-Mart just to see if the coat she is wearing is real fur. Secretly you hope it is, so you can spray the back of it with the red spray paint you have in your cart for your antique chairs on your porch.......upon further inspection you realize it is fake and have mixed emotions.

5. You know what you can eat in every restaurant within a 150 mile radius.
6. You love that you can eat whatever you want and never get fat or have guilt.
7. You have a love affair with tofu and......... Joaquin Phoenix

8. You know the difference between Nutritional Yeast, Brewers Yeast and Fast acting Yeast
9. You own no buttons or stickers that say your vegan....but you do have a hidden tattoo that says......

10. And finally, You secretly plan on making everyone you see a vegan.......and taking over the world.
I hope you enjoyed my silly list. I was thinking this as I shopped in Wal-Mart, being followed by a complete stranger bent on asking me about tofu, while I stalked a woman wearing a full length fur coat. I was picking up some red spray paint for my antique tulip chairs, and getting more vegan chocolate chips for scones, thinking of Joaquin Phoenix and what he would think of my tattoo.........

I'm not much of a tattoo girl, but yours is pretty awesome--and I mean that!
I've been vegan now for nearly four years and I still haven't tried my hand at seitan! I must really be out of the loop! (I have eaten it though, just not prepared it.)
I COMPLETELY relate with your #10: about making everybody into a vegan and taking over the world! :) It's great to hear somebody else say that! I don't feel quite so crazy anymore! :)
I love to meet other vegans, so I am especially happy now to know you!
Take care, Vivacious! :)
Valerie, I so cheated, that is not my tattoo! Mine is very low on my back. It is really pretty and has a flower and would probably shock people if they saw it...LOL
As far as seitan is concerned it still scares the heck outta me! I live in a very small town and I do not know any vegans, just a few vegetarians. When I lived in the city it wasn't uncommon to run into alot of people that shared my lifestyle. I say you can spot a vegan, because we just look so happy. I call it shiny...LoL! I am also so happy to know you and I look forward to talking to you again soon
Oh, thanks Vivacious! You are sweet to me! So you're scared to make seitan, too? Well, I feel better! :)
And don't worry about any confusion with the tattoo pic. It is a great pic, but I'm sure your own is beautiful, as well!
I know what you mean about not having a lot of vegans around. I live near Salt Lake City so I have access to a fair amount of local vegan activity. But in my own little city, well, I don't know of anybody but me and my husband! I understand your situation. It makes it all the more satisfying to be connected to a great online community of concerned, compassionate people--like you
It is wonderful to type with you, Vivacious! I'll be in touch!
Happy, Shiny Vegans Unite! :)
Oh! and I agree with you about knowing what you can eat in every restaurant within a "150 mile radius!" It's true!
Your whole list is great--vegan perfection!
:)
"You know what you can eat in every restaurant within a 150 mile radius"
ding ding ding,lol for sure
Very cute post! Love the David Letterman top 10 :)
Ya'll should definitely try making seitan. I've been vegan for about 10 years, and just made it for the first time this year!! For some reason, I was always a bit intimidated, but it's actually super easy, and MUCH cheaper and yummier than what you buy in the store. I use the recipes out of Nonna's Italian Kitchen. I've made the pork, chicken and beef versions, and they're all delicious!
