Holy Cow, where did the time go?
It seems like yesterday when I held her tiny 8 lb. body close to mine and sang her lullaby's.....While I still sing with her, it is difficult to hold her on my lap (even though she tries), and I find that she isn't around as much as I like. I know she is getting older and starting to live her own life, but I still miss her when she is gone.
I do not normally show my family, but who can resist this picture???
Emma has eaten the same meal for her birthday for as long as I can remember...It is tradition in our family that on your birthday you get whatever you want, and I do me what ever.....
You want 14 different kinds of donuts... DONE, you want 2 dozen White Castles....DONE.....
Kaiti used to eat salmon patties, with roasted brussel sprouts and potatoes ( umm...no, I did not like it at all. )
So in true Brase form, my daughter wanted her regular cake.
A neopolitan cake to be exact. That's right... Chocolate fudge, strawberry and vanilla cake iced with Strawberry cream cheese frosting and topped with chocolate dipped strawberries!!!!!
Plus rolls and caesar salad....
I used Morning Star Chicken strips breaded in seasoned flour then dipped in soy milk and breaded again. I did not know if it would work, but I have to tell you, I thought it was awesome and anytime I want fried chicken I will do it this way.
Now onto the cake. This is not vegan, but it is vegetarian. To be honest, I did not have the want to try and replicate this into a vegan version, and since Emma is a meat eater it really did not matter....although, I did want a cupcake all day.......
I baked it and then it looked.......
After it cooled I put a crumb coat on. For those of you that do not know what a crumb coat is, it is when you frost the entire cake with a light coat of icing to keep the crumbs from coming into your finished frost.
I also served a veggie tray with cherry tomatoes, black olives, carrots, celery, and cucumbers.
Triskets and Ritz crackers.
Vegan Ranch dip
Vegan Chipotle dip
Everything was lovely. The meal was good, Emma got a new comforter set, an elephant and a pair of pajama's. We played Guitar Hero all day and she and I sang together.
Unfortunately Chris had to go to work, but Emma being the sweetie she is waited until 11:00pm to cut her cake so her dad wouldn't miss out...
I have been making our families birthday cakes for the past 10 years.
When we decided to live the simple life, we stopped buying Bakery cakes and elaborate presents. Dinner would be made at home and the presents would be minimal or homemade.
This suits us perfectly and we are much happier than we have ever been.
Every year for my birthday, Kaiti makes me the most beautiful cards and Emma will usually create a flower arrangement from the flower gardens.
I feel so blessed to have my family.
I hope you have enjoyed our special day as much as we did

wow! She is gorgeous! And I love the cake and cupcakes. That would be torture for me to make right now. Actually I have to! My son turns 21 on Sunday and he is flying home for spring break. He loves chocolate cake. I will have to make one baked and one raw so I dont cheat!
So fried Morning Star chicken was good?
I hope she had a great birthday!
She said she loved her birthday!
Time flies with kids doesn't it!
The fried chicken was so darn good. Even cold it was great! I was so surprised to be honest. I do not like Morning star chicken very much, but I thought what the heck right?
So you will make you a raw chocolate cake too for your sons birthday???
You must take some pictures and post a recipe!!! I would like to try it!
I forgot to post the veggie plate...it was so good and fresh, and I made a pasta salad out of the leftover veggies. I am going to post more tonight I think. I made ribz on Sunday and OMG! It was so good! I can't wait to post that too! I tweaked a recipe by Isa, and I like it much better!
ok, gotta scoot..I had a remicade today and I am not feeling so hot....hugs, Brandi
I had enbrel yesterday and I feel crappy today too! I took a big fat nap, but always feel like I am wasting the day away when I do that. Oh well.
I have a recipe for a raw chocolate cake, but only I would eat it. My family is not vegan or raw. he loves chocolate chip cookies, fried chicken, steak, heck..he loves everything right now as he is a college student!
Hey I have a recipe for raw chocolate chip cookies that I got from the Love,Veggies,Yoga blog and it is to die for and super simple! You can eat this dough raw without getting sick like the real dough.
2/3 cup cashews, 1/3 cup oat flour
put that in your blender until it is like flour. Then add 2 TBSP maple syrup, 1 TBSP Agave and a dash of vanilla and blend it til it forms a ball (wont take long).
Then scoop it out and add vegan chocolate chips or raw cacoa nibs and voila! Raw cookie dough to die for! You have got to try it!
have a good day Brandi!
What a wonderful birthday! Your daughter is just lovely. My mother would always make whatever I wanted for dinner on my birthday and it was always spaghetti. I have my daughter do the same thing - she picks out whatever she wants to eat for dinner and I make it. Believe it or not, she almost always picks spaghetti!
Brandi,
Great pics, Emma is adorable. She looks like you.
You clearly love to bake. Your cupcakes are fantastic!
Glad you had a nice weekend with your "little ones".
Raw Sierra,
Your raw cookie dough sounds amazing. I bet it is addictive! I am definitely going to give that a try when I need a cookie fix.

Happy Birthday to your oldest...Mine is 16. The time does go doesn't it.
I saw you were my newest follower, so thought I would drop in and see what was up.
Nice cake. and I think it's neat that even though your a vegan, you cook meat for your kids.
I love that you make whatever they want for dinner. I've done that since they were toddlers, too, and you never know what they're going to come up with. I also do it for my husband, and it's usually a Southern meal. Looks fun!
Mmm, I am glad you saved me a piece of cake. That is so pretty and spring-like. Happy Birthday, Emma! What a great mom you have to make you anything you want...
P.S. My oldest daughter is 20 years old, too. My co-worker came in with her one month old and I couldn't help getting a little teary eyed. Where does the time go?
ok that cake is adorable, i thought YOU were my age if not younger (im 25), your daughter is so pretty, the cupcakes look decadent...the little heart tops are so sassy:)
Such a beautiful cake! It's so creative! You are a good mother, Brandi! What lucky daughters you have!
Love you! :)
Thank you for the nice comments ladies!
Dirty Duck.....I so... do not look as young as you! lol
It is so important to make your children feel loved and while most parents buy their children everything, I think it means more when it is homemade!
Hi Brandi :)
