I keep hearing, "Being a vegetarian is tough, But being a vegan is next to impossible....for me."
I stare my friends in the face, my gaze boring into them, wondering where they are coming from. I am a vegan, Being vegetarian is not tough at all and being vegan is even less of an issue.
I know I have been a vegan for a long time and also that I made it for health choices, but I slid into it so simply that I never struggled...except for cravings. Now with all of the new products that are coming out for vegans, I rarely, if ever crave, and when I do it is because of the hard core food additives rearing their ugly head in my body due to me being ill last year.
Anyone can make the choice to give up junk. Anyone can make a stand against food oppression (more on that later) anyone can make the change.... to change a life, save a life, protect a life or to create a life. It all boils down to what is more important, eating garbage and dying 20 years early or giving up the junk that is killing you and live an additional 30 years.
I have no paitence when someone comes up to me in the grocery store while I am buying tofu or bok choy and asks me why I eat it....Let me rephrase since you cannot see the person asking me.
I cannot stand it when someone who is morbidly obese comes up to me, with a chip on their shoulder and asks me why I am eating that nasty junk (this is a true story) and then tells me that they could never eat that JAP. food, and then waddles away smirking to themselves about how they told me, then they get back on their hover round with their cheetos's and whole milk and twinkie dinner and putter off in search of baby powder so their skin doesn't chaff.....
Infuriates me!!!!
Now do not get me wrong, I am a chubby girl, I am no petite little thing, but here... where I live, I am next to looking like an Ethiopian. There are so many obese people here that it is normal to see a 20 something girl walking down the street with her stomach down by her knee caps. You see 400 lb. men in extra large wheelchairs at chinese buffets. Women in hover rounds riding with obese children in the front basket... IT IS ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU GO INSANE.....And they will fight you tooth and nail to say that they eat healthy...because they eat corn and potatoes.....About 6 years ago, I was thin, well by my standards, I was a size 13, that is tiny around here, believe me... I went to Wal-Mart to get some gimme lean sausage and a few groceries and this young woman probably about 19, approaches me to ask if I know where the (blah blah blah, I forgot) is, and I said yes and pointed her toward the item in question. She started to walk away and then turns around and came back and asked "Why are you buying fake sausage?
I eat it because I an a vegan I said....she had no idea what a vegan was. So I explained to her what vegan was and why I choose that way to live and also how it is a better way to live..etc...She was really interested and she thanked me and took of in search of her items...About 10 minutes later she is being pulled by her mother to the produce section (I was bulk buying I guess or lingering over fruit).
Her mother attacked me for planting (this is the best part) my hippy ideals and moral propiganda into her daughters mind and that they do not eat like birds, all the men are robust healthy and strong in her family and it kept going......I am standing there with my mouth hanging open looking at this women who was probably pushing 300 lbs. dressed in a summer dress that resembled a mumu, gettting my butt handed to me for talking to her kid about nutrition.....I smiled politely accepted my butt chewing and then apologized for upsetting her way of life....and then I cried....like an idiot. I didn't realize what just happened, I was not standing on a soap box handing out brochures and lecturing The fat, the unhealthy, the weak and downtrodden...I was buying MY groceries, minding MY buisness.....PFFFT!
I can handle myself now, I tell people what they ask to know, ignore the people that want to fight and bascially just go with the flow.
My sister in law has horrible eating habits, just ungodly bad. She tries to feed me and I am like, ummmm no, I already ate, then she will say, I made you a salad... but you can't see the lettuce, it is loaded with cheese and bacon and chicken and ranch dressing and eggs.....and iceberg lettuce...
She thinks if it is a salad, it is vegan...yeah...NO. She also thinks steak and potatoes are a food group. No joke.
Kaiti and I are junk food junkies....I admit it, but...it doesn't control us. We indulge occasionally. But not everyday. It will kill you, plain and simple.
We have been watching Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution, it is pathetic what we feed our children and what we deem is ok for food. Actually it is disgusting... If you haven't watched it, go watch it now.. It is on ABC on Friday nights or on hulu.com
I knew it was bad, that is why I sent my children with sack lunches to school, but honestly I didn't want to know, now I am inflamed by it....I want to march into the high school and say where is your dietician......lol
I know that we as vegans are very healthy(well, most of us, I can think of one in particular that is not at all, and no, it is no one here), our blood pressure and cholesterol are low, we are not loading up with junk food (very often) we will live longer and longer lives because of it. BUT....why can't everyone else see that they are killing themselves, the obesity rate is the highest it has ever been, children are develpoing breasts at 2 years old (hello!!! hormones in milk) Children are suffereing from diabete's, heart disease and high cholesterol...and we take them out to McDonalds for dinner, we feed them fried donuts for breakfast and then give them sugary sweets for rewards..... We are killing our children, we are killing ourselves, and no one is trying to stop us.... NO ONE!
Where is the coalition for childrens nutritional rights...Why aren't WE in the schools teaching nutrition? Have you seen the USDA food chart?? GO check it out.. http://www.mypyramid.gov/
Someone needs to start a revolution, Jaime Oliver includes meat in his revolution....when will there be vegan negotiating terms with schools and talking to the government???
I would be the first to sign up for change? Wouldn't you?
Sorry about the rant people...My friend and I got into a debate last night over food, again and it set me off!
For the record, I know vegans can be unhealthy, I realize that the change begins with one person and spreads, but I do not see the change often and I am tired of feeling attacked all the time for eating healthy.... The End : )

Brandi,
You weren't kidding you were on a rant today. I agree with everything you said, but most people don't want to change. They don't believe there is anything wrong with their meat and potatoes diet. It is sad but true. Many of the vegan blogs are no better.
I can not get the imagine of that woman in the grocery store on her mechanical wheelchair out of my head. That is so ridiculous I don't know where to begin.
If you want to chat with someone that agrees with you I will be around this afternoon.
hugs and ttyl,
Alicia
I understand that you need to rant, but it seems pretty judgmental to say that only vegans are living healthful lifestyles. My sister was a vegetarian for fifteen years and had to give it up for health reasons by order of her chinese medicine doctor. she is finally feeling much better. I will never be able to do it because I can not tolerate soy. Healthy to me is eating a variety of foods and limiting the processed ones of which there are vegan varieties as well. When I buy eggs, I buy all natural, cage-free. When I buy chicken, I buy all natural, free-range. I try to be responsible. I rarely buy junk food. We do limit our meat consumption and I make vegetarian meals several times a week. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's not meat/potato people vs. vegans. There are many perfectly healthful people in the middle who have found a good balance. I am honestly happy there are people like you who can do it! Try not to judge the rest us.
The Dude abides, vivacious...The Dude abides.
Go you on your rant! I just want to shake those people I see in the supermarkets, especially those with children, with all this processed JUNK in their baskets and say "What are you doing to your bodies? "Do you have so little respect for yourself? Your kids?" I really admire Jamie for standing up for healthy eating, drawing attention to the importance of it and showing just how badly so many people eat. As Alicia said above it is a matter of "wanting" to change, like everything. Hopefully Jamie is doing enough to show how bad things are and get people out of their state of denial to start making changes to their diets.
I am a vegetarian still, mostly vegan and don't dictate this as the only dietary lifestyle, I think it's a lot to ask for people who have absolutely NO clue about nutrition to make such a change but certainly learning about nutrition is so important.
Thanks for the link to that site- I want to check out Jamie's programme.

Have you read "The China Study"? That is what cemented in my mind that any amount of meat or meat products is unhealthy. We have more motivation than most (cancer) but I really wish we had changed our omni ways prior to a crisis. If you haven't read the book you should, it is nothing but hard science (written by a former omni who grew up on a dairy form) and it is very eye opening. I recommend to everyone that is concerned about health.
Alicia
well I say being vegetarian is ALOT easier than being vegan for me. Now add RAW and GLUTEN-FREE in there, and I think it is tough - at least for me. After 4.5 months, I have been a high-Raw Vegan, and my Rheumatoid Arthritis is WORSE than EVA! I seriously mean I am very bad. My new diet has cured a few things like acne and constipation (and that is a big thing to cure for me) but I still crave alot of things. And I get sick of preparing separate food for me and family. I get sick of preparing my raw food for camping! Haha now I am on a rant. But I feel kind of trapped in this diet, like I cannot go off. Dont ask me why!
Do I know it is healthier to eat this way? OH YEAH - but it is still hard. If I was vegetarian it would be a whole lot easier to go out to restaurants and order anything sans the meat. But vegan is a whole different ballgame. Butter, dairy used in preparations, etc.
I understand what you are saying about how people dont want to change. In fact they dont even want to HEAR about what horrid crappy stuff is in their food.
I am happy that being vegan for you comes easy, cuz it is tough for me. After 4.5 months, I have lost 3 pounds (LIKE BIG FREAKING DEAL!) cant lose anymore, my RA is worse than ever - its frustrating!
I totally agree with you. While I am not vegan, only vegetarian, I eat vegan meals a majority of the time.
I feel so sad in the grocery store when I see carts loaded up with processed crap, not a fresh fruit or veggie anywhere, with the exception of bags of useless iceburg lettuce. No real food.
So I adore Jamie Oliver, and his war on processed, nutrient devoid crap that is masquerading as food.
While it is a shame that he includes meat, we are so far down that we've got to start somewhere.
People do not like to change or even to hear about how unhealthy their processed industrial diet is, yet they have no problem attacking those of us who are trying to eat healthy, whole foods. I have experienced it also. I have been vilified by a few who take an arm-length list of medications because they refuse to change their eating habits and get some exercise. So sometimes it is necessary to rant and get it off your chest. Hope you feel better, know you are not alone, and have a wonderful weekend!
OK, first off, this was not meant to target anyone in particular,it is my own personal opinion, but those that are unwilling to take control of their health and realize that they are killing themselves and their children, are irritating to me personally. No one can say they haven't looked into a terribly obese persons cart in the grocery store and peeked to see what they are eating. While I stick to my vegan guns, and I do think my diet is very good, I must say that it was easy for me to transition into vegan living due to my dietican background, and I have been a food combiner for as long as I can remember.....Whether you are a meat eater, vegan, vegetarian, raw foodist or frutitarian...you must be in control of your health. Period...
I am sorry for those of you that are struggling (R.S) it is terribly frustrating to try to heal yourself and nothing seems to work...I too have felt that way. Last year I was covered in note paper sized plaques from the top of my head to my ankles and crippled on bedrest..it is terribly infuriating to be in a situation when you cannot control your body. I am sure that there are alot of healthy meat eaters. I cannot eat that way, I have several issues with the meat industry and I cannot abide with the way they handle livestock. Even organic, "natural"(everything that grows is natural) or labeled healthy concerns me. I am a vegan, I should not be attacked for buying tofu. I do not picket McDonalds, I do not walk up to randon people and ask them if they know how much feces is actually on their meat, nor do I give them death statistics while they are picking their Filet Mignon! And by the way, being a caterer and a meat cutter previously, I know alot about the meat industry.....
I appreciate those of you who support me, I also appreciate those who have explained their way of life.
And as I have said before, I am a junk food eater, I just don't eat it every day...although sometimes I do eat it all day...lol
I love tator tots and french fries, basically anything fried, but for my health I cannnot indulge in what I would like to eat.
I love each and all of my readers very much and I am truly happy you read my blog!!
Word to all that you said.
I've never found myself having to explain or defend being vegan. Maybe I haven't been at it long enough. I can't imagine being confronted the way you were. How gross.
Loved this post. Love your blog.
Thanks Megan!!! How is your walking going???
Hi VV,
This is my first time here and that was a rant!
People are stupid. What can I say?
I'm a vegan for compassions sake and then I get the benefit of great health too. It's a win win situation for me.
Can't imagine anyone giving me crap for being a vegan! Ha, I bet you won't ever let anyone get away with that again either!
Nice to meet you. Now I'm off to read more of your posts and check out your blog list too!
~janet
p.s.
I do not want to imply that people who are not vegan are stupid. Just ones that attack in grocery stores!
Thanks Gardeners Cottage, that was the entire meaning of my blog..lol
Hope you like the blog!
Hey, Brandi, feel better? :) So, when I became vegetarian, I gained about 30 pounds because of all the pasta and sauces I was eating to make up for the meat. Then, when I became vegan, I also became pregnant, and weight kept coming on. I personally wish I was much more fit and represented the vegan lifestyle better. I finally rejoined the gym in December and am making dents in my hips. :) My problem is that I became vegan for animal ethics, not for health initially, so I continued to find foods that tasted good but were vegan. And not necessarily the healthiest. Now, I'm combining the need for health, want my children (who are slim) to be very healthy, and want my husband to be healthy, too. So, I'm finally approaching food differently. However, because of a lifelong struggle with weight, I have a deeper understanding for other people who are also struggling. The only people that make me feel apologetically about my lifestyle is my extended family, except my parents. We have dear relatives in Oklahoma that are also in the meat and potatoes world, but now there are raw food restaurants there! So, change is-a coming, girl, change is-a coming!
