I am somewhere in between.
I love animals, I do not want to see an animal hurt or abused. I do not want to have to think about where my food comes from and has it been neglected or tortured. Therefore in my opinion I am a vegan. I came to veganism through my disease. I have been told I am not a true vegan because I did not become this way on my own merit. I say that is ridiculous.
In my opinion it really does not matter how we all got here, it just matters that we are here and that we stick together, because there are alot of big bad companies out there trying to undo the changes we are making.
Here is where I either make sense or piss people off....You all know I pull no punches and that I say what comes from my heart, so I hope that no one takes this personally, as I am not attacking anyone of you, just stating facts.
VEGANISM is just as bad for you as meat eating if done wrong. The entire picture above me is vegan, it has as much saturated fat as a cheeseburger if eaten in the right quantities and can cause diabetes's and heart disease. Some people think that due to them not eating meat and being vegan they can load up on garbage and be healthy. THAT is so not true...I know alot of obese vegans, hell I was one one of them. I know what can happen if you still eat the same things you ate before coming vegan.
It doesn't matter if you take away meat, you will find a substitute. Gravy can be made vegan. Hell, I made Chicken and dumplings vegan remember?
Having a family and transitioning into veganism is hard. It is a safe bet to make foods they will remember eating as a meat eater. Macaroni and cheese, pizza and Boca burgers come into play when you start out. But after being a vegan for years there has to be a point when you go.....I CAN DO BETTER!
People try to lure you away from, and some people try to drag you deeper into veganism. It really is your own decision whether or not if you want to save animals and be healthy. There should be no separation of the two. IMO, health should be on every ones mind. If you have children, there should be no way you would feed your child something that will kill them 30 years down the road. If you do not know how to prepare healthy vegan, go buy a cookbook, if you cannot afford a cookbook, go to the library, there are hundreds of vegan cookbooks there.

I am not going to spout that my way of eating is better, I am not going to say that I do not like junk food or home style cooking. I love gravy, and "meat loafs" I adore rice dream and cookies, and cakes and candy.
But, I have to be a role model for my children. Statistically America is more unhealthy now than ever before in history. That is crazy!
I can understand people in the 1950's not knowing about health, they were led around like cattle back then, but today with everything we know and everything we have seen over the past decade as far as disease is concerned, WE should be the healthiest people on the planet.

Next discussion....
FRENEMIES
People smile in your face when you say you are going vegan, then they are going to pat you on the back and say good job and we support you....
Until....they feel threatened by your choices.
We all have felt the sting of rejection from our friends and loved ones over the changes we made when going vegan. Should we still feel the sting within our own community?
Should we create a wall of indifference between what a true vegan and a false vegan should be?
Can we not meet in the middle and say hey, I like you, you are like me and we eat the same things!
I am a health vegan...I choose my path with the greatest of care. I stayed up late reading about veganism and what that would entail. I listened to other vegans talk about the cruelties inflicted on helpless animals and the atrocities that our own society commits in the name of food production.
I have watched and will continue to watch the video's of the crimes against animals as a reminder that I can make a difference.
But....I also know that experiments on animals save people. They cure people and they stop disease. I have a life threatening disease. My children have a 40% chance of carrying the same strain that I do and therefore could possibly contract my illness and it will end their lives prematurely too.
Can I sit here and tell you that I would not risk an animals life if it could save my own child.....NO, I cannot.
But I can tell you that when and if they legalize experiments on people that I would be the first on at the door to sign up. I would risk my self to save someone else.
If we, as human beings can stop the inhumane torture of any creature shouldn't we be willing to step up?
I support stem cell research on people, I also support abortion for children and women of rape and incest.
We are all different. We all make our own choices in this life. Let us not step away from each other and turn our backs on our own KIND. We are all in this together.
Healthy or fat, vegan or vegetarian, black, white, American, or Israeli.
Inside we all look the same.
I do not want to separate the classes of vegetarians. I also do not want to call myself something different so I can appease a set group of people.

I will do whatever is in my power to stop an uprising amongst our family. Because that is what we are. We are our own nuclear family set up in blogdom, visiting and sharing our recipes, talking to each other about our lives and dreams for our families. Very picturesque, don't you think?
I accept all of you.
EVERYONE SHOULD ACCEPT EACH OTHER.
There I have said my peace.
If I offended anyone It was not my intention. I have not spoken out directly about anyone in our community. It was not my intention to start any wars within the community either.

Very nice blog - not offensive in the least!
I have often thought of many vegetarians who are actually "breadatarians".
I agree that eating vegan junk food is just as bad as eating meat!
A whole foods approach is best.
Thank you.
As you know I don't understand the divide between people that come to veganism for ethics or health. Like you I love animals in fact I first tried vegetariansim at 11 because of my love of animals. However it wasn't until we were fighting cancer that I went into veganism completely. I can't understand why people want to draw the distinction between "us and them". That seems so counterproductive and exclusionary to me.

Ali
well said.

Excellent points. I recall speaking with a vegetarian years ago (before even considering vegetarianism or veganism for myself), who answered my question of whether it was a difficult lifestyle by pointing out that potato chips, French fries, and cheese pizza were still among her food options. Still fairly young and sheltered somewhat from a non-omnivorous lifestyle at the time, I found this to be a revelation. Any you're so right; vegans are certainly not exempt from potentially submitting to unhealthy habits.
I also don't understand why some people get so incensed over trying to make distinctions between vegans who originally adopted their lifestyle out of love for animals and those who originally did it to improve their health, or even those who did it out of environmental concern. It should just matter that we got here and are following are hearts and minds to do what we feel is best.
You make some excellent points. I came to veganism for ethical reasons but also want to maintain a reasonably healthy lifestyle.
I think most people are somewhere in the middle in that they usually eat healthily but occasionally have the odd 'junk' food. It's when you exist purely on junk that it becomes a real issue for most people. But this is the same for anyone regardless of whether they are vegan or not. I realise everyone's idea of moderation is different also.
Some 'health' vegan bloggers may think I'm a bad example of a vegan because I occasionally eat a hotdog. Other 'ethical' vegan bloggers may think that 'health' vegans are bad examples of vegans if they continue to wear leather and use cosmetics that have been dripped into animal's eyes.
This is where the importance of acceptance comes into it. As you said, we have to celebrate the things we have in common rather than our differences.
I totally respect people who are vegan purely for health reasons and those who are vegan purely for ethical reasons and all those in-between.
Very thought-provoking blog. Thanks :)
Teresa, Thank you for your kind words. I wanted to write a post that would come across pleasing and not an attack. I truly believe in a community we should all strive to be as one and not seperate ourselves into "I am better than them...because......"
Ali,
I agree with you completely!
Thanks for the hugs....lol
Janet, Thank you!!
Tifanny, I have also heard vegetarians tell other people that they eat "enter junk food here"...I cannot say I find the appeal in change and that someone telling me familiar foods would lure me into a diet change faster than saying you cannot eat anything and everything tastess like dirt...LOL
People become incensed when they feel their own beliefs are being challenged. We must all get along and realize we are all working toward the greater good together!
Carol, I totally agree with you. I used to love "hotdogs" and would eat one once a month chicago style!!!
While I do not eat hotdogs now, if there was a miraculous cure and I would never get sick again, I would eat all kinds of junk...LOL
Only if I never gained weight too...
I am still new and eat alot of junky things (but I am working on that, in my own time, like most folks).
I think we should all worry more about our health (myself included). I also think most vegans would agree that less animals eaten.. is less animals eaten.
Less fighting, more hugs.
Being a vegan doesn't mean pointing fingers at others or acting like we are better than others. We make a choice to live a better life and hope by our example others will find there way to our lifestyle too.
Regarding junk food, I brought brownies one night to a get together and my girlfriends son was going to get his 3rd helping. She said to him "even if those are healthy doesn't mean you can eat all of them". I was thinking, they are still brownies with sugar and white flour in them, just because I'm vegan doesn't mean that those brownies aren't a junk food. Funny what people think.
I've always been health conscious but it wasn't until 4 years ago I finally realized how the animals were treated and what we ate impacted our environment.
As far as animal testing is concerned they are doing alot more testing on human tissue that is actually more accurate. Rats are rats, mice are mice and humans are humans. More and more on t.v. I'm seeing a medication that they now are finding out has life threatening effects if you have been taking it.
Anyways, you have really good info and thank you for sharing your story and experiences and food. I look forward to reading more.
Kris & DIV- Thank you for taking the time to comment on my blog! I am glad to find other like minded people. I am looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts!
You make so many excellent points. Growing up, I was definitely a junk-food vegetarian and my first year of veganism was a disaster. I had to educate myself, and listening to my body taught me a lot about what I was eating. In fact, it still teaches me, as it was somewhat recently that I realized wheat products do not make me feel good.
No offense taken here. I'm right there with ya!
This is so true! I have my license as a personal trainer and generally like healthy food but it is soooo easy to slip up for so many reasons. Thanks for this post it just inspired me to revamp my blog and share my own struggle
